Relay Teams Course Details and Rules
Each relay team will be given one timing chip for the race. All K-12 relay participants will need to hand the timing chip that they will be using for the race like a baton to the next participant in each event of the triathlon. After the swim portion of the race the swimmer will remove the timing chip from their ankle and hand it to their teammate for the bike portion, once the cyclist is finished with their leg of the race they will remove the chip and hand it to the runner of the relay team. This will be the only way to get accurate timing and if a team doesn't follow by the rules they will not have a finishing time and possibly be a part of the age group prizes. The timing chip/baton will be handed off in the transition areas of the triathlon; each relay team member will wait next to the designated bike or run transition area before leaving for the next leg of the race.
9-12 Relay detailed instructions:
In the 9-12 relay, all relay participants will share a timing chip and timing chips will need to be handed off to the next participant like a baton. All relay participants will wait in the transition areas for their relay team to complete each stage of the event before the next stage will begin.
Swim/Run Transition (T1): After the swim portion of the race, each swimmer will remove their timing chip and hand it the running member of the team in the Transition 1 section of the race which will be located outside the gate of the Miramonte pool. Once the timing chip/baton is handed off the runner will start the first leg of the run course from Miramonte High School to Del Rey School. Runners please follow cones and course markings to the next transition.
Run/Bike Transition (T2): In transition 2 in the Del Rey parking lot the runner will remove and hand the timing chip/baton to the cyclist of the relay team and the bike course will begin. The runner will wait in the transition area for the cyclist to finish the bike portion.
Bike/Run Transition (T3): Once the cyclist finishes their portion of the race the third hand off of the timing chip/baton will occur for the 2nd run transition and the runner will proceed back to Miramonte High School for the finish around the track and field.

BIKE COURSE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: For relay teams, why does the runner have to run two legs; one from the pool to the bike transition area and second from the bike transition area to the finish line?
A: Our primary concern is safety. If the bikers run from the pool to the bike transition area, we are concerned they will run in biking shoes which could cause a slip or trip injury or damage the shoes. For those bikers who choose not to run in bike shoes, they will have a significant disadvantage when they stop to change out of running gear and into biking gear. Therefore, to minimize the risk of injury and damage to gear, we are requiring the runners of a relay team to run from the pool to the bike transition area and then complete the run potion of the triathlon.
Q: Will there be course marshals along the bike course?
A: Yes, we will have volunteers with radios at all intersections and other strategic locations in case first aid or other assistance is needed.
Q: What if I cannot ride my bike up the hill or get too tired to finish the ride?
A: We strongly encourage every competitor to do their best. If you need to walk a section to regain your strength, we encourage you to do so. The course marshals will be monitoring and offering moral support as needed. If you decide not to finish the race, you must report your number and name to a course marshal before leaving the course.
Q: What if I get a flat or other mechanical problem?
A: We strongly recommend that all riders carry a spare tube, an inflation device, a multi-bike tool and knowledge to complete emergency repairs. An official support vehicle will be available to help with repairs or bring any bike and rider back to the transition area if they cannot finish the race for any reason. If you can no longer ride for any reason but want to finish, a racer may run or walk his bike into the transition area to complete the bike portion but they must have the bike in their possession at all times and when they reach the transition area.
Q: Can I have MY personal support vehicle help me if I need a repair, replace a wheel or switch my bike?
A: No support vehicles or non-racers will be allowed on the course during the race. Only the official support vehicle will be allowed on the ride course during the race. All riders must finish the ride portion with the bike they started using.
Q: What if I lose my bib number during the race?
A: All riders must have their bib number with them at all times during the race. If you arrive at the bike transition area without your bib number you or your team will be disqualified.
Q: Will traffic be stopped along the bicycle route?
A: We will make every effort to stop traffic to allow each bicyclist unimpeded access to the road. However, if you encounter a vehicle during the race, you are required to obey all traffic laws. Remember that safety comes first.
Comment: Rider interference will not be tolerated. Riders, even if in the lead, must move the right and allow overtaking rider(s) space to pass. Anyone that interferes with another riders progress will be assessed a 5 minute penalty for the first occurrence and disqualified for the second.
EVENT RULES & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
The Northern California Kids Triathlon desires a fun and safe event for all participants. Please review the rules and precautions for parents/guardians and athletes:
Bike Helmets
Appropriate bike helmets must be worn and buckled during the bike portion of the event. Parents/guardians must assure that the helmet fit is proper for the athlete. Helmets must be fastened before mounting the bicycle and must remain fastened until the racer dismounts their bike at the end of the ride in the transition area.
Bikes
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to take the athlete's bike to a qualified shop for inspection and adjustment prior to the Kids Triathlon. Training wheels are allowed for younger grade levels.
Attention should be paid to brakes, steering, wheels, inflation pressure, tire condition, chain, and pedals. Pedals should be inspected for sharp edges and appropriate measures taken (such as duct taping) to prevent cutting injuries should the pedals hit the athlete's legs.
The openings at the ends of the handle bars must be securely plugged. "Bar Ends" (plastic caps) can be purchased at any bike shop. This is a safety item in the event of a fall. Bikes with unplugged handle bar ends will not be allowed in the triathlon. All bikes will be inspected.
Swimming
All athletes should be comfortable in the water. Approved swim aids such as kickboards will be allowed and in some cases adults will be permitted to assist children. No performance enhancing aids such as fins will be allowed. Each athlete should be capable of safely swimming the designated distance with no or minimal assistance.
Running
Parents/guardians should assure that the athlete has footwear that is suitable for running the designated distance. To avoid tripping, the athlete should be able to properly tie his/her shoes, preferable using double knots, or by using speed laces.
Sun Protection
Parents/guardians should provide appropriate sun protection in the form of sunscreen and clothing.
Athlete Health
Parents/guardians should assure that the athlete is in a physical condition that will permit him/her to participate in the event without jeopardizing his/her health or that of other participants.
First Aid
The event will have a medical staff available in the event of an emergency.
Eyewear
Children that require prescription glasses must have a headband to hold the glasses in place during the event. If the glasses must be removed for the swim there will be a volunteer available to hold the glasses. Athletes who choose to wear non-prescription sunglasses during the bike and run should consider a headband but it is not mandatory.
Hydration
Proper hydration is important. It is suggested that you place a full water bottle in your child's transition area and remind him/her to drink during transition and following the event. Any child showing signs of dehydration should be brought to the Medical Tent.
Bibs
Each racer will be provided with a numbered bib and some safety pins. The bibs must be worn on the front of the body during the run and must be clearly visible when the racer crosses the finish line.
Shoes and Clothing
Appropriate shoes and shirt must be worn during the bike and the run portions of the race. Shoes must be laced or buckled-up prior to mounting the bicycle and must remain laced until the racer dismounts their bike at the end of the ride. Shoes must be properly laced during the run. Flip flops or similar shoes are not appropriate footwear for the bike or run courses.
Transition Area
All race gear that will be used throughout the race, including shirts, shoes, shorts, towels, bicycle helmets and socks must be arranged in the transition area next to your bike prior to your swim wave start. No gear may be brought in afterward, or provided by spectators on the course.
Sportsmanlike Behavior Expected
Courtesy and respect should be shown by all participants and fans at all times during the event. Inappropriate or un-sportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated. This includes behavior directed to fellow racers, fans, organizers, or volunteers. This includes behavior by parents as well as kids. Dangerous behavior will be cause for immediate ejection from the event. Inappropriate behavior may be subject to disqualification.
Rule Interpretation
All rules are subject to the interpretation of the race officials, whose decision will be final.
Refunds
Because most expenses are incurred prior to race day, no refunds can be issued under any circumstances. The event will happen rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, we reserve the right to hold a biathlon or a shortened race course. There will be no rain date. Event officials may make changes to courses without notice to ensure safety and event success.
